- Restoration of Shackleton’s Cabin Deck (Rys Quest)
- Grant Awarded: £12,060
- Board approved: February 2016
The deck cabin from RYS Quest, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s last expedition ship, was the cabin in which Sir Ernest died in 1922. Athy plans to conserve and restore the cabin in readiness for display as a central exhibit in the new ‘Shackleton Museum’ to be established in Athy, County Kildare, Ireland.
The work on the cabin will be carried out by Conservation Letterfrack, who are specialists in timber conservation and preservation (the cabin has been outdoors for much of its existence).
This project forms part of the whole museum development, a project costing in the region of €1.5m.
The grant fulfils UKAHT’s goal to ‘preserve and enhance the unique physical heritage of human endeavour in Antarctica to the highest standards, in the UK, in Antarctica and beyond’.
